The Herd

You will see a fun assortment of breeds and crosses here at Flat Branch Farm. We try to plan our breeding and calving schedule to have around 3 cows in milk at all times throughout the year. This great for our herd share members because that means there is no "off season" when all the cows are dry and milk pick-ups are paused. We also enjoy having raw milk year-round!

Each cow is entitled to a two-ish month "dry period" where she gets (gently) kicked out of the milk barn into the big pasture with the beef cows. During this time, she can rest & recuperate from all of her hard work during the past lactation. This is also when her body prepares for the upcoming birth of her new calf and next season as a milk cow. While this year-round plan and carefully orchestrated rotation is great, it also means there is no off-season for the milkers. We milk two times per day 365 days per year.

Below you will see the beautiful girls that make up our milking herd. They are all lovely cows and fit in really well with our herd share program.  We enjoy their different personalities they each bring to our farm... some like to love on us and come running for pets and scratches, and some yell at us from the pasture when we are 5 minutes late for chores. It takes all kinds, doesn't it?

Ronnie, our herd bull, makes an appearance on this page, too!
